The Yale team considered three possible immune mechanisms of myocarditis:
- Autoimmune/molecular mimicry
- Hypersensitivity/eosinophilic type 2 immunity
- Cytokine-mediated lymphocyte/macrophage activation
They didn’t find evidence supporting the first 2 theories. Because they found an unusual cytokine pattern, they believe that cytokines are activating lymphocytes/macrophages which in turn causes symptoms.
