The winds have shifted - Trump administration is pushing the lab leak theory

A Select Subcommittee of the US House of Representatives looked at the coronavirus pandemic. It found that the “possibility that COVID-19 emerged because of a laboratory or research related accident is not a conspiracy theory” (page 2). Whitehouse.gov has put up a new ‘lab leak’ webpage that nudges the reader into thinking that it did leak from a lab.

However, the house subcommittee also said that Operation Warp Speed was a great success. Buried in the report is their actual take on the vaccines (which they don’t call therapeutics):

The COVID-19 Vaccine, While Largely Safe and Effective, Had Adverse Events That
Must be Thoroughly Investigated

The cynical view is that not that much has changed.

What’s actually going on

The politicians get obsessed about certain things that help them make money.

There is a faction of Washington that wants the government to spend a lot of money on ‘preparing’ for the next pandemic. When the SARS1 pandemic happened, the government gave money to EcoHealth Alliance to predict the next pandemic. EcoHealth thought that it would be a good idea to engineer viruses that would jump from bats to humans to understand how the next pandemic could emerge. The problem is that this type of research -‘gain of function’ research- could cause a pandemic. They’re making pandemic viruses in a lab that could accidentally leak.

I guess they won’t do gain of function research again but they will spend money on pandemic preparedness. Whenever the government spends a lot of money on something (like giving money to Ukraine), the politicians and their helpers have already found ways to divert some of that spending to themselves.

That’s why they still have a pro-vaccine bias. The vaccines are ‘Largely’ Safe and Effective now. The US has a long history of making pharma profits without creating products that are actually good. Cures like the hepatitis C antivirals are rare (and don’t make that much money for pharma).

The current system is kind of like a mafia-style extortion racket. The mafia threatens to burn down your business so that you will pay them protection money not to burn it down.

The US government has historically spent huge amounts of money on VAERS. They spent millions on genetic sequencing machines to find viral contamination in vaccines. The FDA is very sophisticated when it comes to finding problems in vaccines. If they find potential (or actual) problems and look the other way, then they have the option of burning down your business at some point in the future. That’s how the game is played. They know what they’re doing when it comes to finding problems and not acting on them.

What this means for the vax injured

There’s a chance that the US government will give serious recognition to COVID vaccine injuries. Something like this has happened in the past- the US government started the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program in 1986.

It’ll help a little bit, but money won’t solve problems with your quality of life. And it won’t do anything for people with vaccine injuries that are hard to prove.

The ideal solution is to have treatments that work. Unfortunately, the US pharma industry isn’t really setup to do that. The pharma industry makes the money when the drugs aren’t that effective (cures are less profitable) and aren’t that safe. Humira, which was the most profitable drug in the world for many years, only reduces the symptoms of autoimmune disease and has side effects (because it suppresses part of your immune system).

There’s a small chance that the current US system will come up with something really helpful. The US government funded HIV drug development and that led to drugs that suppress the virus and allow HIV positive people to live very normal lives. (By the way there are many people who are HIV positive without knowing it. Some people can suppress the virus without drugs.)

Overall, it seems unlikely that the US government will meaningfully do something to help the vax injured. There needs to be a cure or something close to it.

do you think that, if the lab leak hypothesis is proven in a definitive way to be correct and not a “conspiracy theory”, will this make the part of the public that considers that vaccine injury is also a conspiracy theory to reconsider their views? maybe people has made their view on the vaccine subject such an important part of their identity that no amount of evidence will change anything… I hope I’m wrong on that

I don’t think that the lab leak hypothesis will be proven in a definitive way because China has been blocking an investigation.

But let’s suppose that it is proven… there will still be a part of the public that doesn’t believe that vaccine injury is real. Look at Amber Heard versus Johnny Depp… there are people who believe that Depp was the abuser and not Amber :poop:. If there’s enough at stake like the whole #MeToo ideology, then people will believe in what they want to believe.

In any case, I personally am not that bothered that there are haters out there. The real problem is that there is no silver bullet cure. (Though some people like myself are mostly recovered or practically fully recovered.)
